As a fan of Fuze's work, I was excited to hear he would be joining this year's MAY WOLF game jam. While I wasn't disappointed, Horn and Fang shows stark signs of amateurishness. Still, I had a blast reading it.
If you're like me, a Fuze enjoyer, you may be quite familiar with all the... "topics" they enjoy depicting. Worry not, it is all here in some form or another. The smile that took over my face when "medieval fantasy briefs" made their appearance is hard to describe. The project also shows some restraint with the horniness, allowing readers to get to a good grasp of these characters before the adult scenes. When the horniness does come, it's incorporated a pretty amusing fashion. Those who have read Fuze's comics will be familiar with the progression here.
Fuze's experience with comics does turn out to be a double-edged sword, I find. While the overall structure is solid and most of the dialogue works, when narration kicks in, those signs of what I'm calling "amateurishness" start to show. As fun and engaging as it is, this FVN suffers from sloppy exposition moments and awkward descriptionsthat I found didn't properly convey settings and actions. A heavy use of tropes also harms it in a way that makes it harder to standout as a written work.
Speaking of tropes, I have to mention the art. Again, to the Fuze-heads reading this, you may be very familiar with their... penchant for depicting a certain body type. Don't get me wrong, there are laudable attempts (within and without this project) to add some variety. However, it remains an aspect I found hard to ignore, especially as a fan. Other than that, expressions here are varied and balanced, even if there are moments where they don't quite match the situation or text. Also, given my previous comment, I want to stress it doesn't stem from a problem with the quality of the art itself. Years of comics have taught the artist not only how to draw characters but to depict them in a way I find readable and distinct from one another; a display of real skill.
Through what I find to be (mostly) negligible flaws, Horn and Fang manages to deliver some fun moments that are sure to please those who are fans of the artist. It struggles to deviate from furry and high fantasy tropes, but remains overall enjoyable. A recommendation for sure.
