A quiet universe is an exceptionally well constructed piece of horror that takes great strides to prime its readers for an extended stay aboard a dying space ship.
A deeply evocative sense of space invites CERHA and readers to step into the cramped corridors filled with slowly unfolding signs of what has unfolded aboard Upon Silver Tides. All while regularly weaving in reasons to buy into the characters, relationships between them, and their place in fleet's dire circumstances that serves as a backdrop to CERHA's otherwise deeply personal tale.
Threats are established, characters push through them, and only once there is a full picture that fully immerses the reader in the situation does everything start to change. A delightful pace that shows restraint where it is needed is backed up by a constant effort to reaffirm that these characters are worth caring about.
Which is important, because this is a story that isn't shy from being deeply uncomfortable to the point where everything seems to slip from the grasp of CERHA and readers alike. Even once the craft of conflicting motivations that drive the plot are all out in the open, the story's cast are the ones to push back and reclaim whatever it is they need to keep going.
And I just think that's a really beautiful thing. This is one of the easiest books I've ever recommended.
