captainstupids rated Growth RPG [18+]

A downloadable game for Windows.

This is extremely impressive.

It has rough edges and it's a tad grindy at times, but it has pieces that are very clever and it's fairly enjoyable.  I spent a surprising amount of time playing it today.

Let's start with the bad things: it has rough edges. This is completely understandable given the size of the dev team and the fact that it's free.  Some of those rough edges come in the form of menus not closing when you hit tab or the close button, escape not closing them, or odd menuing.  UI is hard.  Some comes in the form of in-game bugs, like being able to accidentally exit out of the tutorial or getting stuck in the save area because you get yourself one-hit-KO'd or insta-killed by a boss.  I got frustrated early on because of how long it would take to get into a battle and how long it would take to load after a battle.  This got to be a bit intolerable for the battles where I would one-hit the enemies.  Once my level reached a point where I could just literally run over enemies it was more appreciated, but the load times are still a nuisance.  Combat itself is something I'd call 'fine'. I don't love it. I don't hate it except when I'm killed instantly.

The good: the world is sprawling and filled with things that are fun little treats.  There's more variety in the quests than I've seen in some games, though they are (mostly) fetchy.  The character customization (while not my cup of tea) is impressive and quite flexible.  Dungeons have the same repeating patterns (get low, etc, etc) but they're visually distinct and feel like they play a bit differently.

The great: the system where people build up stats on level up and then drain them to gain skills is brilliant, and a nice way to do the ebb and flow of filling and deflating.  I very much enjoy the animations and effects on leveling up.  The max size and physics are welcome.  Self-collision would be great but honestly it's probably impossible with current-gen hardware.

Overall, a supremely executed game.
