ninjaneko1207 rated To Trust an Incubus - Full Game! Bara Yaoi BL Visual Novel

A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

I wanted to like this game but there were many moral issues. There was so much non-consent happening that felt creepy and gross. The demo seemed fun, if i was willing to ignore the red flags. So I decided to purchase the game. However, the route I played (Harsi and Saji Polyamory) contained so many things that felt almost rape-y. Like when it was revealed that the assistant dude used to be asexual but was "converted"? That is some of the worst representation I've ever heard, treating asexuality as if it's something that needs curing. Also, asexual does not necessarily mean aromantic. The professor and the assistant could hypothetically love each other without requiring sex.

Also, it felt as though Saji was straight up guilting Kenta into the polyamory. It felt like a one-sided discussion. Kenta was just a doormat. If he had more of a choice I would have said yes more willingly. But both options seemed to be a resounding "yes" because I picked that I'd hypothetically be in a polyamorous relationship much earlier in the game.

Even if I could look past these issues, the writing left a lot to be desired. The sex scenes didn't feel natural at all, what with the characters yelling exactly what is happening like a cheap porno. It felt exaggerated and forced.  Especially the threesome scene with Harsi and Saji. I spent $20 to hear cheesy dialogue that I could easily hear for free on the Hub.

The finale was rushed as well. Kenta peeks in on the conversation that the four incubi have and instead of us, the readers, hearing the conversation, he just describes what is happening. I feel no emotion in the "and then they broke down crying and hugging". The voice actors that were hired are damn talented ones and it felt like a waste for such a pivotal scene to be so cheap. It comes across as cheesy and rushed.

Like I said at the beginning of the review, I wanted to like this game. I am a writer myself and I am well aware of the struggle of writing a long and involved piece. I've never written a visual novel and I respect the hell out of people that do. However this one just made me feel gross and violated, honestly.

This game was published in December of 2018. It's been almost exactly 6 years since that date. I know that the writer(s) have most likely expanded their portfolio since this game. I hope it's better than this one. There is potential in the writing. But it hasn't reached its goal in this game.
