I enjoyed the premise of TYOV. It is dark and focuses on the loner-vampire archetype rather than the political social predator that you see in group centric games. This was actually my first experience with a dedicated solo RPG. I really got into it.
The journalling aspect wore on me though. It felt a lot like something to provide inspiration for a creative writing project rather than a game. That is good and bad. I like writing, but at the time I was looking for a game, not inspiration for writing.
I also found the managing of memories, the "mechanic" of game, frustrating. I routinely shuffled them into my character's diary then discarded them later. This often got in the way of the flow of the game for me.
While I stopped playing before reaching a conclusion to my vampire's story, I don't regret playing TYOV. It was a good first exposure to solo roleplaying and helped me realize that a journalling game, especially a longer play journalling game, isn't my style.
