RhythmlessWalker rated El Paso, Elsewhere

A downloadable game for Windows.

There's something here that I liked, but it felt like the game fell flat on its face a few times. The game outstayed its welcome for me - a lot of the encounters felt repetitive and it takes a very long time before you're playing against the full roster of enemies and the gameplay gets interesting. I think I wish the game was just a few hours shorter.

The writing is what kept me playing, but it veered between great and what I would call Brian Michael Bendis-y - too quippy and referential that it pulled me out of the fiction and made the characters fall flat a bit. Oh, and I know the game's committed to the Max Payne bit, but the mostly flat voice acting did not help in most cases.

I really liked the character artwork though, and all the ways the levels transformed, moved around and surprised me. And like I said, despite the irreverent quippiness at times, the writing was pretty solid overall. Oh, and the music was great!

But Fromsoft really did some damage to boss fights if even a third person shooter decides that it needs boss fights where you need to precision dodge roll your way through, huh?
