telmes rated Save the Villainess: An Otome Isekai Roleplaying Game

telmes rated a game 1 year ago
A downloadable game for Windows and macOS.

While I was deeply looking forward to this demo (and its eventual full release), I cannot recommend this game in good faith to anyone for a couple of reasons. First: the devs' lack of caring about accessibility options. Sure, not every game needs to be accessible. At the same time, if you're marketing a game to a wider audience, it would go a long way to look into including dyslexic fonts or removing the seizure-inducing animations. Game dev isn't easy. It may take time to add these options, but it would build back trust among our small indie otome community and show the audience that the team cares about more than their fictional villainness.

Second, all of these promos and streams has told me very little about the actual content of the game. With visual novels especially, the writing is the heart. At the time of the demo release, the copywriting indicated a more serious, nuanced take on the otome isekai tropes. The actual demo leaned more on the comedy (along the lines of "Touch my brother and you'll die" or "Saving Kyle"). Comedy is fantastic! I just hope that future content promotes the comedy and chooses to engage a smaller and more devoted playerbase.

I see a ton of potential in this title, especially if devs take the well-meaning critique to heart and choose to flesh out the storyline. (The love interests have equally neurodivergent writing, btw, not just Jane - but that can be a strength, especially if taken into account in future drafts.) I also hope that their backers and audience will be satisfied with the game produced.
