XanthicPrinceps rated DreamCatcher: Reflections, Volume 1

A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android.

I seem to remember first stumbling across this story back when it was a comic on Smackjeeves? There were a lot of wonderful comics that I lost when Smackjeeves went down, but I'm ecstatic that this wasn't one of them and that the creator has continued to work on it. The art is breathtaking, the voice acting is on point, the action caused me to gasp, and the music is lovely.

I don't think we're far enough in for me to judge the story as a whole, but I think what exists right now is a pretty solid short arc establishing initial dynamics and hinting at future reveals and conflicts pretty well. The hints at Luna's backstory with Lunos were done perfectly, I think--just enough is revealed that we have a pretty good idea of what happened and why Luna hates her old partner so much, but enough is kept hidden that I think some interesting stuff may yet come out about it later. So you know the author has an excellent sense of balance.

Wasn't a huge fan of the voice grunting in parts that weren't fully voice-acted, but I think that's says more about my personal preferences, it wasn't overly distracting. I also had some initial difficulty opening the game, but I think that too was more about my security software throwing a fit--something similar happened a few months ago when I tried installing some RSS Feed software for the first time. It also sometimes takes a little long for the game to open, only for it to finally open in multiple window, which ends up causing some weird stuff to happen with the music. Again, though, that might just be oddities of my computer rather than the game itself, but fair warning.

Regardless, I'm not very experienced with Visual Novels and Kinetic Novels,  but I'd begun thinking about turning one of my stories into one, and despite my lack of experience I found myself enjoying this one a lot. I think I learned a lot from the experience, though I'm sure that's not everyone's priority here. In the end, I'll close off with this: I really look forward to seeing where else this story ends up going, and would love to play the Beta Chapters for Volume 2! Which I think is the thing this story is first and foremost shooting for.
