Goddess-of-Gales rated Deep Breaths

A downloadable game for Windows and macOS.

This wonderfully detailed narrative kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end! The artwork, character designs, and interesting premise are what initially attracted me to this one. While the art is gorgeously detailed—including the backgrounds and CG of course—what ended up impressing me the most was the execution of the storytelling. Definitely could feel the blending of horror and sci fi elements, neither of which are my genre of expertise, yet the flow of narration did an excellent job of immersing me into the story. There was a perfect balance of being clear enough for me to follow along, while still feeling authentic and maintaining a suspenseful mystery aspect.

The structure and pacing were spot on. While the memory loss may not be the most original approach to a mystery, it certainly was the smart choice in this case, as it allowed us to retrace the experiences of Krybdis as they struggled to recall their own passwords in order to get a grasp of the perilous situation. I appreciate that the lore and details were strategically revealed in gradual amounts as each log became unlocked. Despite the impressive amount of details, I never felt overwhelmed with too much information.

Though this felt more plot-focused with the mystery and survival serving as the main course, while the romance felt more like a side dish, I did enjoy both Krybdis and Cylla as characters including their relationship. Their individual personalities were well defined, creating an interesting dynamic between the two. In terms of romance, their relationship was more "told" than "shown, which would be a negative thing for me in most cases, but here it works. Because at the beginning of the VN—unknown to both Krybdis and the reader—their relationship was a thing of the past. A forgotten memory that ended up being an unspoken regret, because Krybdis never took that final step in reciprocating Cylla's feelings when they had the chance. Having the two characters separated, so they couldn't see or touch one another until we get the choice of confronting Cylla at the end, despite knowing it'll be our doom, made for a very emotional impact.

In terms of constructive criticism, I would've liked just a little more background in terms of their work/research for the sake of clarity. They refereed to their job as a "routine mining operation", but Cylla mentioned they deserved death because of it, which led me to believe what they were doing was morally wrong, but this was never elaborated. So I was a little curious to know more about why they were down there and what their mission was. It made me wonder exactly what did they encounter that led to this tragic situation in the first place. I felt the writing was being purposefully vague in order to hide that information from the reader (unless it was mentioned or hinted at somewhere and I just overlooked that detail, which is a possibility).

Aside from that minor confusion, I was overall thoroughly impressed. Especially given all that was accomplished within the span of a month, I think of this as a well executed and professional looking VN, with a unique vibe all its own. Would love to see more in the future. ^_^
