I'm sure reviewers have written hundreds of words on why Troika is so good, so I'll try to make this short:
The first thing that drew me to Troika was the art. It's beautiful and evocative. What really hooked me, though, was the writing. No less evocative, it painted a picture of a weird sci-fi fantasy universe peopled with strange automata, fake dwarves, and lawyers who litigate at swordpoint. With just a few short paragraphs, every one of the 100-odd (and they are really odd) characters presents a window onto a whole world.
Mechanically reminiscent of the fighting fantasy games of my childhood, Troika is very easy to run, though it took a little longer than I expected for a group of 5 people to make up characters from scratch (the group included complete newcomers to tabletop gaming, but they were all champs) taking almost an hour.
About the adventure in the book - it's a great way to get your group started on their Troika journey with lots of really colourful character encounters. I don't think my group had a single combat until they - having made friends with one of the tigers - decided they couldn't leave them to their fate.
A just £5 for a pdf, this game is a steal. You are literally stealing from yourself if you don't buy it. Go and fill your life with Troika, now.
