A fun little visual novel. I really enjoyed the character designs, thought they were all very unique, interesting, and you could get a good idea of their character just by their appearances. I also liked the gameplay elements of getting to choose where we wanted to go. That we only had enough time to choose three stores, motivated me to want to playthrough at least twice so I could see all the various scenes and interactions.
For constructive criticism, I felt the writing was a little lacking in detail. Specifically, I feel the story could've benefited from more narration and explanation of who all the characters are. Jordan's goal of wanting to buy the perfect gift for Greg is clearly established, but his motivation wasn't as clear to me. Aside from those brief and random phone calls, I didn't really get a good idea of who Greg was as a character or why Jordan cares about him so much. I feel like I have a better idea of the characters working at the mall than Greg, as all the information we have of Greg was presented second-hand based on what we were told as opposed to what was shown. This made it difficult for me to resonate with the main character's goal, as I didn't feel motivated to care about the end result.
During my first playthrough I actually assumed Jordan and Greg were dating, but then was surprised to discover they were just friends at the end. And then in my second playthrough they were making jokes about Jordan proposing to Greg? So I was just a little confused as to the status of their relationship all throughout the story. It felt kind of inconsistent to me. Though in the end I just guessed Jordan had an unrequited crush on Greg and everyone knew about it except Greg.
Aside from me struggling to connect with the characters, I did enjoy the casual—if somewhat jokey—slice of life and would like to see more Jordan and his friends, so I can get to know them even better. I think this is off to a good start.
