A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

A visual novel with a clearly remarkable team behind it. Both the art and the writing clearly a cut above here; both the character drawings and many of the interiors have a wonderful style, with detailed and beautiful colouring. The writing, particularly the dialogue, has a sharp, invigorating edge to it without feeling overdone or unnecessary. There are rarely reams of text; the emotions and details are boiled down to what is needed, meeting the classic criteria of "show, don't tell", which is so easy to forget in this genre of game.

The setting is an odd beast, no doubt in part due to this being only "chapter one". There's a a slow, uncomfortable, brooding menace about the whole place, despite its fairly innocuous appearance at first, and perhaps that characterises it more than anything else so far. The characters are far more memorable than the details of the place itself, for better or worse, and how drawn you are to the world here may more depend upon how well you like these characters - or even, which characters you happen to meet at all. The main plot hook is quickly introduced but not all detailed, giving you only a vague and somewhat unfocused path forward. It's clear that they want the focus to be the character and world dynamics, at least, in this chapter.

In the end, a seemingly innocent choice suddenly ended my game a few turns later with little more than a "bad ending" prompt. An unfortunate case of the choice options not being particularly clear, perhaps, but it was at this point that lack of a real hook didn't compel me to start again, but this is one to definitely revisit in the future. If you like visual novels at all and have some spare time, I highly encourage a look at this, if only because of the art and writing. There's genuine talent and quality here, even if you find it's not quite for you.
