This is a very strong demo for what I hope is a work in progress project.
The only information on the game page is as follows:
"Deppart is an indie first-person horror game with shooter elements. Be very careful, enemies kill you with one hit."
This is not a FPS. Yes you are looking through the eyes, (or maybe the body camera) of our protagonist but you are not an invincible space marine. In fact, you are a very afraid human being. The perfect character to embody in such a game.
Visually the game is stunning. Photo realism is achieved through a clever use of shaders and a great understanding of depth of field and other camera techniques. You may want a second or third play through when you are feeling a bit braver, just to appreciate the environmental work.
Similarly, the sound and music are fantastic. Really menacing, brooding soundscapes put you right on the edge from the start, and there are a number of neat audio cues that will make you JUMP! The music could be straight from James Wan's favourite nightmares playlist. Screeching strings and bass like a savage caged animal. There is no respite, only claustrophobic tension.
Gun play is quite erratic and frantic. It's how I imagine someone without any training would shoot. Enemies are tough and give no quarter to line up shots. Make your shots count because if you need to reload when one of those things is coming towards you, it's game over.
The really scuzzy vibes will have you thinking of Hostel and Condemned: Criminal Origins and other grim situations you really wouldn't want to be in. Played it through to completion three or four times and I really hope the developer continues to work to flesh this out into something more than a prototype.
