I bought this looking for a more rules-lite take on Destiny and was surprised that the game and its lore can stand alone with no connection to its inspiration. In fact, if I ever run this, it will probably be with the included setting. If you are looking to pick Light up without any Destiny knowledge, know that the setting is a sort of science-fantasy (more like Star Wars or Warhammer 40,000 and less 2001: A Space Odyssey or The Expanse).
As far as the system goes, I dig the power fantasy style. It reminds me a lot of the There Is No Spoon or Exalted RPGs. The PCs have access to amazing levels of power so winning a mission isn't so much a matter of being strong enough. Rather, it is a test of how well the players can apply their incredible strength.
The mechanics are simple and super-fast at the table. In combat situations, the GM controls enemies as reactions to PC rolls (the enemies don't get a turn in the traditional game sense) in the style of Apocalypse World and it does a great job to keep the focus on the PCs and their heroics.
Light is a great game that doesn't waste your time with pages that don't contribute directly to its mission of powerful science-fantasy protagonists taking the fight to humanity's enemies.
