Mr. Bill Sky rated HOW WE KNOW WE'RE ALIVE

A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

A bit of a bare mystery given the 40 minute runtime, but supported by really strong aesthetics. I can see why the anti-mystery route was taken – probably the smartest choice with such a short run-time, but at the same time the anti-mystery reveal and dressing down of the protagonist, though given evidence form the start, happens to have some… bad optics. Sara, though she projects her own opinions onto Maria, has legitimate concerns about their hometown, and admittedly the subtext of “you were wrong to question the idea of a young woman immediately having a child and getting married to start a family life”, when Sara got called a lesbian (regardless of whether this is true or not) can leave a bad taste.

This is combined with the more legitimate points of Sara not holding onto Maria as their life went on, and Sara thinking she made the ‘right’ choice. So a bit messy.

And, you know, in a more morally ambiguous work, this would be fine! But given the conclusion (and the art book text), it is very clear what the game wants you to think about Sara.
