The gameplay is simple and intuitive, even if I personally don't like the control style.
It's smoother if you use the arrowkeys to move while directing with the cursor, since you can move them at the same time. E is the interact button, which makes it easier to open doors and chests on the go if you're controlling with WASD, but unfortunately WASD doesn't let you move the cursor around while moving, so it makes directing clunkier.
As a gaming experience, it's a chase-and-hide style game with a horror aesthetic, a little silly in a creepypasta way, but quite fun!
With the various difficulties, you can make it quite a challenge to collect the souls. I played once through on every difficulty, and while it was fun to mess around with the hardest setting, I actually think the easiest difficulty is the most interesting!
Removing the enemies and just exploring the castle makes for a more eerie experience since you aren't distracted with running and hiding, or by the campy nature of the ghost designs, or the sounds of peach and toad. Something about wandering around in the dark quiet castle by itself made for a great atmosphere, and also made the 'ending' feel more put together, instead of like a random loss-state.
I definitely recommend at least one playthrough this way.
