twilit.phoenix rated Mira's Brush

A downloadable game for Windows.

I really want to like this game - it's cute and has a focus on exploration and puzzles. However I find it too punishing to really want to continue. I played it in Windowed mode, but even then the platforming controls aren't quite tight enough, especially with only being able to use the analog stick when playing on gamepad. The color mechanic is interesting, but if an enemy is coming towards you you're just as likely to get hit by them as defeat them. A few enemies on new screens spawn in close enough that if you don't know they're there ahead of time, there's a high chance you'll just die. Some of these include the.. I think unkillable enemies? As well, the checkpoints are one use each per level (by which I mean one save, not one respawn), which can be frustrating given the amount of backtracking each of the puzzles requires. This means that the most reliable way to fully complete a level is to play through it multiple times, rather than solving all of the puzzles the first time you go. I'd love it if you could repaint a checkpoint in a different color to overwrite the previous save. Some assist mechanics would be nice too - like recovering your health if you stay still for long enough, or if you steal color from an enemy. Ultimately I think this sort of game would be more suited to a Wario-land style rather than the more traditional health/dying model it goes with; maybe hitting an enemy or falling down a pit slows you down or sets you back a little, rather than killing you and having you redo everything from your last checkpoint. That way the platforming doesn't get in the way of the puzzles and exploration as much. This game clearly has a lot of love and heart put into it so it's a shame that I wasn't able to get much out of it.
