uncommonstuff rated The Night Journey

A downloadable game for Windows and macOS.

I was put off by the price tag for a while as there has been very little coverage on the game. From what I have read, the reception has been more than a little polarized. As a fan of BFI and the Criterion collection, I could see that this game mirrored a lot of the films that I love. Dark, beautiful, thought provoking, abstract, etc.

You will either fall in love with this game or hate it. Don't simply write it off as another pretentious “art game”. That always suggests that there is little or no substance to the experience. While the art design is stunning (seamlessly integrating video into the environment) it is the sound design that really makes this work.

Sadly, I think the price tag will mean that very few people will experience this game. I did toy with buying a physical copy, but their was little in the way of extras (artwork, making of, features, commentary) to make that investment worth it.

An honest description of this is “a thought provoking walking simulator that integrates 3D environments, video and sound to create a truly unique experience”. Not for everyone... But then again, good art should never please everyone.
