vencabot rated The Search

vencabot rated a game 3 years ago
A downloadable game for Windows.

A pretty point-and-click adventure that's held back by the navigation mechanics and the heavy-handed, on-the-nose message. The Search seems inspired by Myst in terms of how the player moves through the world, but many screens have no interactables, and so it becomes fairly bothersome and disorienting to have to move and turn the character by incessantly clicking around. Aside from that, the narration really hammers in the story's central message in a way that seems to think very little of the player's ability to figure it out on their own. Although this game's world is easy on the eyes, I wouldn't have minded if the narration and notes would have backed off a bit to make the experience seem more mysterious and surreal. I think you sort of lose those elements when you're so eager to explain everything all the time, constantly. It was still enjoyable, though!
