What is 13 Gates? That's a question I kept asking myself throughout my playthrough with the game. It's so unique in its mechanics and design that I never quite answered that . . . But enough with the existential nonsense, the question is 'Is this game any good?' And the answer may surprise you. The game touts itself as a dodge em up and I concur with the claim. You really do dodge your way through the levels and that's not a bad thing. The developer's basically putting a nice twist on a familiar genre, think of a 3d bullet hell if you will. And whilst on the topic of levels I did enjoy the excellent blend of tight corridors with wide open areas. The actual visual design helps to reinforce the feeling of mystery and intrigue.
Now onto to gameplay which is probably the game's strongest aspect. The controls are great! It doesn't feel like the Dev just programmed WASD and mouse to move. It feels like they actually sat down and said, "Now how can I make this as comfortable as possible?" and it really shows. You have a nice weight to yourself and the turning sensitivity is one akin to the likes of Doom. Controls are the most important aspect of game, the title can look good and sound good, but if the game handles poorly then what's the point? I just wish gamepad support was a thing. This is the kind of game that would really lend itself to having those kind of tangible controls.
I mentioned sound design briefly and I think it's just okay. The music is more ambient than anything and while that's alright in its own right, I just feel like this game should have had a more memorable soundtrack. Something a little more lively or even just prominent! Think along the lines of Donkey Kong's StickerBrush Symphony. A track that doesn't scream at you, but still appropriate for it's world.
Though speaking of sounds, get used to the death sounds, because you'll be hearing it a lot! The later levels definitely ramp up in difficulty and complexity. The challenge is welcome though, the game's always finding ways to test your abilities and motor skills. Like for example, you're given power ups like a shield and stun abilities, but they never feel overpowered. They just help you, but don't break the game which is what I call perfect balance.
This game is currently free on itch.io and I implore everyone to check it out. It's one of those experiences that are better played than talked about. It's got oodles of charm and polish, two things that are just so hard to come by these days. That's why we at Shock Site give this game 5 out of 5. A fun challenge for those looking for a good time.
