Likable, interesting characters share a world affected by the quality of their choices. Elijah is a solid viewpoint character, relatively 'normal' but with surprising depth, to introduce us to the world and its inhabitants. Each acts in generally sensible ways for their characterization, making good and bad decisions as appropriate.

I was especially fond of Cyrus personally. All too often, stories with the 'awkward' guy make him the butt of an endless tide of jokes. 'Haha, look at this tool, he doesn't know how normal people act!' Cyrus neatly sidesteps this, while being even odder than most. You get a real sense that he genuinely doesn't understand how many things function, but is still a real person.
