If you're a fan of fast-paced, tough-but-fair platformers Blitz Breaker is an absolute necessity in your collection.
It has a central hook that is immediately understandable but tough to master, and builds on it with a gradual introduction and combination of new elements. There are multiple degrees of challenge - each level has a time to beat and there are optional extras and bonus extra-hard secret levels to unlock - but it's also possible to eschew all that and just play through the story levels.
Controls are simple, tight and responsive and restarting a level is near-instantaneous. Each level is short enough to hit that just-one-more addictive feeling; save for some boss fights and super-end-game bonus levels you never need to learn more than a few screens at a time. Plus, everything is clearly readable at a glance so there are none of those annoying moments where you die to what you thought was just scenery.
Total playtime I would estimate at 2-3 hours for a standard playthrough, maybe double that if you want to 100% it. Some of the bonus levels reach hair-tearing levels of difficulty but frankly I consider that a positive, and I never felt like I was being tasked with something impossible - I just had to keep improving my timing and reactions!
If it sounds like I'm gushing it's because I am - this thing is a hidden gem and for £3 it's an absolute steal. If you enjoy games such as Super Meat Boy, Celeste and VVVVVV you owe it to yourself to check this one out.
