An incredibly helpful and informative video essay! Speaking as a very novice game developer, this gave me a lot to think about, and greatly enhanced my perception of platforming controls and how to implement them.

I even learned many new things about concepts I already knew to pay attention to, such as the camera—I never would have thought about moving the camera ahead, or the other tricks mentioned in this video essay!

I especially loved the preset run and jump controls you could switch to at your leisure, and had so much fun playing around with the Sonic, Meat Boy, etc methods of control! Being able to see the numbers and settings for myself helped me learn even more about each factor and how they influence the character.

This is a wonderful video essay, and I would absolutely recommend fellow novices and beginners give it a spin—you learn so much in such little time!
