UsernameMKII rated Zelda: The Trident of Power DX

A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

I heard of this game from Kaze Emanuar's F3 2021 and the title and trailer seemed pretty good, so I decided to search for it and download it.

Overall, I can say without a doubt that this game is criminally underrated and deserves far more attention than it is receiving.

After 6 hours of solid gameplay, lore and cutscenes, I have only just completed the first dungeon which is a testament to how much game there is to play and how expansive the world is.

Exploration feels rewarding and quite often there are clues and puzzles which feel great when you solve them and get a reward.

This is one helluva fangame. I really hope Nintendo doesn't take it down. That would suck.

The game is made with love and passion, and it shows.

With some minor polish and adjustments (freer movement for enemies and players [but that might be an engine limitation]), and QoL improvements (a button that skips text when held and even faster text options, maybe even instant), this game would be near-indistinguishable from a mainline 2D Zelda game.

As an objective rating, I say 8.5 out of 10.

But because this is an indie game I'll be generous and rate 5 stars.

I look forward to completing this game :)

Edit: This game would benefit from a guide. I was completely lost for a good 3 or so hours trying to find the next dungeon because I forgot where the map told me to go as well as there being little to no indication I was going in the right direction.

I want something to fall back on in case I get really stuck, instead of running around the map searching for a hidden bombable wall or new place previously undiscovered.

Places where I got lost and needed a guide:
- Finding the desert sanctuary.
- Finding the bombable walls in North Tylistem.
- Finding a moveable rock in snowpeak.
- Realising that violence won't allow you to push a button in the wall and pressing it nicely would solve the problem.

+ Many more I have forgotten or yet to experience.

Thankfully there is a complete playthrough of the game and I have been consulting it when I get stuck.

In the game's defense, it does have:
- Good plot, story, aesthetic music.
- Backtracking after unlocking a new item feels rewarding.
- Passing a cave usually unlocks a quicker way from A to B.
- Good exploration which rewards adventurous players.
- Satisfying fundamental gameplay.
