A Handful of Dust takes place in a zombie apocalypse; with that, you know the whole plot.
With a genre as overexplored as zombie apocalypse, it takes a degree of uniqueness and open mindedness to make it interesting that is lacking in this story. While nothing is borrowed or taken from wholesale from any particular work, this project is soaked in so many tropes it's hard not to see where the story goes from a mile away. There is interpersonal drama that bears more potential, but it also doesn't quite stick the landing. Its development is too fast and its conclusion hits a little too close to "Have you tried not being sad," to not cause an eyeroll.
Though the main developer is a musician, the use of audio is plagued by a strange sparseness. Perhaps not most, but huge chunks of the game are in complete silence, most tracks being used for a handful of dialogue setences and never again. The idea is likely to evoke a feeling desolation befitting the setting, however the actual time spent without a single hint of sound evokes confusion whether your device is working. A more liberal use of sound effects or even the tracks already in-game would go a long way.
All that said, writing is solid (sans a handful of adverbs) and the pacing makes for an easy-to consume experience. AHoD is far from unenjoyable but It could benefit from having a stronger identity in order to become memorable.
