This is something that should probably be configurable, as web browsers have every opportunity to get in the way. As an example, initially, left shift triggered specials instead of Q. This worked fine on desktop, and fine on Firefox, but not on Chrome—Chrome would allow one left-shift to be detected, and then would prevent future left-shifts, up or down, from being detected at all.

Q seems to be an effective substitute for now, though.
