ABOUT:
Thought I'd upload a little 48h game jam project my friends and I worked on just before corona hit and our university closed.
The themes were growth and music so we initially had an idea about the player getting more powerful over time (picking up weapons and the such). We chose a synthwave aesthetic to make music and art development a little easier, and we chose a space ship as the player to explain away all the crazy weapons available for use. Unfortunately, there wasn't enough time to add in the pickup mechanic so all the weapons are unlocked from the beginning. You have to fight a giant alien space ship before time runs out instead. The growing mechanic comes from a huge fireball emanating from the ship's laser. It engulfs the city if the player is not fast enough.
Our main focus was to add as much juice to the gameplay as possible. Everything is animated in some way. There's huge explosions, screen shake, time distortion, and even a dynamic soundtrack that alters depending on the gameplay. The name Dead Quiet was a joke, given one of the awards was for best soundtrack.
With more time, we'd probably have added in a proper ending for the game, but we did our best for the time constraints!
Despite everything, we managed to snag an award for music and just one vote away from a gameplay award too!
We don't plan to any more work on the project unless it becomes popular for some strange reason. In which case, we would go ahead and fully flesh it out, improving the gameplay, finishing the UI, and adding multiple levels with new mechanics.
