This is the first time I'm updating the game and I'm afraid of accidentally removing my data. 

I'm playing on Android, do I just download the new apk and install it? Or do I need to save the game files and only then install it to get the game data back? 

Most games only require the first option, but one can never be too sure, which is why I'm asking here.

You download the new apk file and install it. It'll automatically update your game files without touching your saves.
