Free music software for beginners?

As the title states, I am looking specificallyf or a free music software to use for both sound effects, track management, and even composing my own stuff (though I have 0 experience with that, it would be more of an experiment to see if I could). That being said and google searches coming up with too many confusing results with pro/con lists that I don't always understand, not being a music editor / composer. So I came looking for suggestions. I am not looking for an ultimately powerful or robust program, as I am not ready for it at all. I am looking for a usable program, fairly straight forward for beginners, that allows publishing of my own tunes for use in games, for no cost (however paid options for 'upgrade' versions is totally acceptable. I plan to pay for one at some point, just... once I know if I can compitently compose. lol)

Any suggestions are appreciated, and if it's not too much trouble a short list of the given program's features (if one is specifically for sound editing more than composing, etc) would be doubly as helpful. I also hope that others looking for good programs can find some benefit from the topic as well, the more the merrier!
