On fedora I just downloaded it and added the .exe as a non steam game, then I selected proton experimental as compatibility layer and it worked fine.

Yes as Turimmar said, one method is to add it to Steam and use one of the Proton versions. If you don't know what that means, there are concise tutorials for setting up Steam Play that explain how to do this.

Specific info at the bottom if you choose this method. vvv

If you're not using Steam, and using base Wine instead, make sure you use winetricks and/or winecfg to set up your wine prefix properly with all required DLLs installed (again, there are tutorials for this, so I won't wall-of-text it here).

For the Steam option

I've been playing since 0.8 with multiple versions ranging from Experimental to 9 and 10, as well as Glorious Eggroll, and am currently running with the CachyOS version of Proton no problem.

The non-steam game should use the "VotV-Win64-Shipping.exe" binary to make things simple, and should start in that exe's folder.

Make sure that, wherever you put VotV, you set your Steam game's 'Target' and 'Start In' fields properly. If the game's folder has spaces, make sure these fields are surrounded by quotes.

Example from my own setup, using quotes since my game is spaced with "Voices of the Void", located on a separate drive:
Target: "/run/media/lychos/TCreateNVMe/Games/Voices of the Void/0.9d/VotV/Binaries/Win64/VotV-Win64-Shipping.exe"

Start In: "/run/media/lychos/TCreateNVMe/Games/Voices of the Void/0.9d/VotV/Binaries/Win64/"
