Not sure how to start, but...

Last year a good friend of mine showed me a game from the same team who made the Nintendo Switch game "Crawl", and that game is "The Maitre D". Just this cute game where you can extend/de-extend the body of your character by obtaining lotion throughout the level and placing the patrons to their seats as they are also scattered through the levels too.

My friend Annie has made all the assets for this game... you name it. From the character, to the environments, menus, etc. She did it all and I feel is the star of the show and hopefully I made some justice with what she gave me.

Our game, "Chapped" tries to do the same... instead of lotion, we are getting chapsticks throughout the level. See, if Greg (the character above) gets chapstick, he's able to extend his neck by one so he can grab tough to reach chapsticks. Because with them, he probably won't be able to get them.

Annie has done game demos for her bachelors degree in fine arts while at school but I haven't partaken on making a demo in what some time. Like, I always start something and then sit on my hands halfway through and never get it done. This time its different. I wanted this done several weeks ago but for whatever reason it just hasn't crossed the finish line... yet. I feel its 90 percent of the way there.

That's Greg with his neck outstretched  (he's actually showing his idle animation... its shoots off after three seconds of idle) and all he has to do is press jump with the spacebar key to reach the chapstick. This would be the first level too... just to show the player what they can do with Greg. There's four more level afters this further showing what they can do with Greg, while making it just a bit harder to grab chapstick (but not too hard).

I'm using Game Maker Studio 2.0 to help bring Greg to life and its been... an adventure so far. Things that I feel that should be working or not, or things that shouldn't be working are for whatever reason, or why does the sprite start ghosting as he moves across the screen or why do I feel this impending doom with GMS2.0 as more objects are added to the game... that's been my thought process every day as I wade through the game to see this through.

Annie and myself can't wait to share with our friends and acquaintances and you guys. Stay tuned!

So a little follow up from last week's post.

Cute little cut scenes explaining why Greg has to chase down after his chapsticks. And it turns out when his order came in through, Saharazon (where he placed his order from for 2 hour shipping) dropped his chapsticks all over the Sahara... and now its Greg's job to find all his chapsticks before his lips get too chapped.

(one of our cutscenes with a small dialogue box explaining what's happening)

What I'm really proud of is that dialogue box you see above. See, prior to that dialogue box was another one where I couldn't get the timing just right and the dialogue box was too small at times and it just didn't work out... but thanks to the efforts of Friendlycosmonaut and her awesome DialogueBox tool, I was able to bring it to the game with no fuss. (its good with GMS1 and 2... https://friendlycosmonaut.itch.io/dialoguesystem)

While the text above is placeholder, its gonna tell our hero that he can't leave this particular level yet because he needs to grab all the chapstick. The rock you see above has a little collider letting us know if Greg is ready to leave yet or not... and if he isn't, a friendly dialogue box will tell us otherwise.

What I find pretty cool is that when Greg turns the corner and hugs the collider as you see above, then he has this 'hook' effect going on. I absolutely adore it and this screenshot makes me think... "goodness, that's so cool."

And then right after, the user could press 'Q' on their keyboard so that the head returns to its body, thereby eliminating all of the necks he had created so far. Its such a neat effect, IMO. I also may most likely have the user press 'E' so that the body travels to where the head is currently at.

Can't wait for everyone to try out 'Chapped' soon... almost there!
