In the new update when I tried to load the game up after I press start it just freezes my character at the spawn point and I cannot move or do anything. I can flick the light on and off if I press it with my mouse but I cannot do anything else. I cant even open the settings menu.

You have to delete CompanionData.txt from your save location. Check top notes at main game page to see the path to locate that file.
