You press ESC to open the menu and select "Save" from the options on the left.

If you can open the save menu but saving itself doesn't work, you may have your game folder on a write-protected location, for example an usb-strick. Moving the entire game folder somewhere else would solve the issue in that case, as the game is unable to create save files in write protected folders.
