Autosave in Twine (Harlowe) visual novel

Hi there!

I'm good at writing texts (at least I'd like to think so), but I'm a terrible programmer. And I really need your help.

At the moment, I'm working on a very large visual novel that will revolutionize the world of video games (tag "sarcasm" on). Okay, in reality, it's just a cozy indie project, but it is really very large. And since it is designed for about 20 hours of play, I would like the game to be automatically saved after each passage.

As an example, I present you this cute novel https://wildisland.itch.io/alltarach

As you can see, 1. At the beginning there are only three buttons: "NEW GAME", "SETTINGS" and "CREDITS".

2. Make a couple of choices (click on the words highlighted in blue).

3. After a few transitions, close the file.

4. Open it again. A fourth button ("CONTINUE") will appear. If you press it, you will continue from the point where you closed it.

How can I do the same? I have scoured the Internet and even found something similar here:

https://twinery.org/forum/discussion/5643/automatically-saving-the-game-in-harlo...

https://intfiction.org/t/how-to-add-auto-save-in-harlowe-3-2-0/53561

But I am so stupid that you have to literally say to me: "Dude, please take this piece of code and paste it HERE, you dumb piece of sh*t".

Please help me, because I am completely desperate.

Hi! I’m the author of Alltarach. It’s been quite a while since we set up the save logic for the game. I started writing a reply thinking it was pretty much just a copy-and-paste job with some slight modifications from the Twinery forum example you linked to, but it turns out it’s a bit more complicated than that. If you still need help, let me know, and I’ll try to put something together for you over the next few days.
