https://itch.io/jam/-zombeez-game-jam-by-fan-studio

Dates: June 14th, 2024 - June 30th, 2024

Prizes:

  • 🏆 $500 Prize
  • 🎮Collaboration with Fan Studio: We will be taking care of the publishing process, marketing materials, promotion, and most of the development work involved afterwards, while working closely with the winner to publish the game on Nintendo Switch, PS, and Steam.
  • 💸Revenue Share: The winner will receive at least 10% of the sales/revenue from the game on these platforms (after taxes). This is the starting point for negotiations, especially if the winner chooses not to be involved after the game jam ends.

We have published the Terms and Conditions for our Zombeez Game Jam.

🕹️ Good luck, and happy developing! 🧟‍♂️

Clarification on Revenue Share and Negotiation: We want to make it clear that the 10% revenue share mentioned is the starting point for negotiations. Our goal is to establish a fair and rewarding collaboration with the winning developer. Both parties will be actively involved in the negotiation process to determine the final revenue share based on the developer's contributions and experience.

🕹️ Good luck, and happy developing! 🧟‍♂️

We’ve been following the discussions on social media and want to address some of the concerns raised.

We’ve heard that offering a 10% revenue share, even with the additional support for development, feels insulting to some in the community.
This was never our intention. Those who have been in the game development business for many years understand that a project developed in a game jam is not a ready-to-ship product.

Our original assumption was that an indie game dev, who participates in the jam for fun and wins, might not be interested in or able to put in the effort required to fully develop the game for publication. We envisioned a scenario where the winner hands off the project to us, and we handle the majority of the work. In such cases, we proposed a minimum of 10% revenue share as a bonus to the winner.

However, we understand that this can be seen as disadvantageous to newer devs unfamiliar with publishing deals. The high variability in the revenue share indicates that we are open to negotiating a fair deal that reflects the winner’s involvement and contribution.
We should have communicated this more clearly.

Additionally, we reserve the right to give written permission for games developed during this game jam to be published using our assets. This is something we really believe in. The market is saturated with spammy projects and low-quality games. If a talented developer (not necessarily the winner) wants to publish a polished version using our assets, we would be more than happy to consider and potentially approve this. Our goal is to ensure that only high-quality games make it to market, benefiting both the developers and the players.

We genuinely want to support indie devs and create a fair and rewarding opportunity for everyone. Moving forward, we’ll:

  • Reconsider the minimum revenue share to ensure it reflects a more equitable split.
  • Make our intentions clearer regarding post-jam collaboration and the potential for higher revenue shares.
  • Ensure our terms are transparent and fair for all participants, whether they are seasoned developers or newcomers.

Thanks again for your valuable input.
We are committed to revising our approach to better align with the community's expectations and create a positive experience for all participants.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - Zombeez Game Jam

Q: Can we use a framework like Corgi Engine for Unity as the base and build our game on top of that, or does it have to be developed from scratch?

A: Absolutely! Feel free to use any frameworks you’re comfortable with as a base for your game.

Q: Is it okay to create additional assets that fit the existing style for our projects?

A: Definitely! You’re welcome to create new assets that complement the current art style.

Can gamedevs of non-winning entries continue developing the game and publish it? (Without your assets obviously)
Absolutely! You can continue developing and publish your game without our assets if you don’t win. We encourage creativity and further development.

Gameplay Restrictions:
We’re quite flexible with the gameplay mechanics.
Here are some specifics:
2.1. Combat:

  • Both real-time and turn-based combat are acceptable.

2.2. World:

  • Menu-separated levels, hub world-separated levels, open world, procedural, or any mix of these are all acceptable.

2.3. More Action or Puzzles:

  • Either more action-oriented or puzzle-heavy games are welcome.

2.4. Microtransactions:

  • Microtransactions are generally discouraged for the game jam submissions.

2.5. Endless Game or Set Amount of Levels:

  • Both endless games and games with a set number of levels are acceptable.

2.6. Story Heavy:

  • Story-heavy games are definitely welcome.

2.7. RPG Elements, Character Customization, Progression, Leveling:

  • These elements are all acceptable and can add great depth to your game.

2.8. Multiplayer: Online, Local, Coop, VS:

  • Multiplayer in any form (online, local, co-op, vs) is perfectly fine.

There are no strict restrictions beyond these guidelines, and we want to see how creative you can get with the Zombeez assets. Feel free to experiment and bring your unique vision to life!
