Single Player:
You can use WASD, Arrow Keys, Mouse, Touch or Gamepads, all should work. With the gamepad it checks i think every 3 seconds if there is any input pressed, so if you hold the dpad or left stick it should pick up your inputs.

Multi Player:
Go to "Player Setup" on the game title menu to configure which set of controls will be used by each player.
