I have just started game dev. and are looking for any pixel art tips to help anybody new like myself to make pixel art. so if there are any tips you can give to anyone including me that will be appreciated.

I’m sure other folks will share the usual links that get passed around for folks new to pixel art, so I’m just going to mention one thing I don’t expect to see coming up (that I think is genuinely important):

Unless you already have a background in other art mediums, don’t limit yourself exclusively to pixel art-specific resources when learning. While each medium has specific techniques and pitfalls, the core fundamentals are the same and those are the skills that will get you farthest.

And on that note, I’m gonna rec a non-pixel art video series with a lot of really useful tips and information: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLLmXZMqb_9sbNLM83NrM005vRQHw1yTKn

For a novice, I would specifically recommend the videos on good shapes, perspective, and light & shadow. All of the videos are good, but those in particular are the most valuable for someone just starting out imo (you could argue about the shapes one, but the concept is relevant to cluster techniques in pixel art so I think it deserves a spot).

thank you.

Wow uhh, I kinda assumed there’d be more suggestions after my post. So to not to be an ass, I’m going to also link some pixel-art specific materials that I expected to see popping up: https://lospec.com/articles/pixel-art-where-to-start/

This is a really nice guide that I wish I had when I first started. It also links to several tutorials that I did read back then, so probably a good starting point.

Lospec is a good resource beyond that too, they have a tutorials section with a ton of material though I cannot vouch for all of it, sadly. At the very least, here are two tutorial-maker that I can vouch for:

  • Pedro Medeiros (aka Saint11), you can find their stuff in that tutorials link above or right here on their website.

  • Thomas Feichtmeir (aka Cyangmou), they took down their old tutorials from DeviantArt after the AI debacle but I believe they’re in the process of re-uploading them to their Twitter account

Lospec also has a palette gallery containing tons of premade color palettes that can be used for free. Personally I don’t like premade palettes, but they’re quite popular with newcomers since it’s one less thing to figure out when making a piece.

thank you.
