With the length of the game in its current state, it might seem very daunting to catch up back to where you were before if you need to move to a new device, lost save files somehow, or if you're just a player who put the game down a long time ago and wanted to pick it up again. However! There's a feature in place now that'll fast-track you through the game's content and get you pretty close to where you left off.

Simply follow this comprehensive guide for whichever situation suits you best, and you'll be caught back up in no time!

I'm moving to a new computer/phone/device and want to preserve my saves.

(Alternatively: A recent KT update prompted me to do a fresh installation on Android! What should I do?)

Okay! There's a couple methods you can try, as well as the checkpoint system as a fallback.

  • Transfer your saves from your old device
    • PC Players
      • KT's saves are stored in a typically-hidden folder, accessible through opening your Run program, and inputting "%APPDATA%" without quotes.
      • From there, you can navigate to the RenPy folder and find save files located inside the KilligansTreasure folder, which should be able to be copied over without any issue.
    • Android Players
      • It's normally much harder to access save files on Android, but it's possible with apps such as File Manager Plus.
      • Once you have an appropriate app, navigate to Android>Data>com.killigans.treasure and copy the ENTIRE FOLDER, not just the save files inside, and move the files to your new device.
    • Transferring from PC to Android
      • As far as I know, it's not possible to move saves from one platform to a different platform, at least at the time of writing. For now, it'd be best for players that want that to use the checkpoint system.
      • Turns out there is a way, thanks to a method discovered by MatrixPrime!
        • First, be sure you have the .apk (the file that starts with com.killigans.treasure) already on your Android device.
        • Once that file is transferred to a PC that already has save data, it copies in into the PC's .apk file.
        • Copy THAT specific .apk file back to your Android device, via a USB cable.
        • Saves may be on the wrong pages, but they should be in working order.
      • Please note that this method is ONLY for transferring PC saves to Android, there is no known way to transfer Android saves to PC.
  • Restart your playthrough using the checkpoint system
    • If your old saves are unsalvagable, the best course of action may be to start up a new playthrough and use the checkpoint system to catch up to where you were before.
      • To do this, start up a new game with the "New Start" button on the main menu. You'll be prompted for whether you want to start from the very beginning of the story, or skip the prologue. If you select the option to skip the prologue,  you'll be prompted again if you'd like to skip to certain points in the game's story, going in a sequential order. Choose the one that you remember happening most recently in relation to your lost save, and you'll start with a default setup.
      • When using this checkpoint system, you'll start at the beginning of the appropriate day with a neutral personality, default equipment, and appropriate stats, as well as a choice in romance partner, if applicable.

My current saves are unusable/give me an error! What should I do?

Don't panic! There's a few courses of action you can take.

  • Try from a previous save
    • You'll lose progress you'd gained since that save, but if an older save works, you can use that to catch back up to where you left off
  • Restart your playthrough using the checkpoint system
    • If your old saves are unsalvagable, the best course of action may be to start up a new playthrough and use the checkpoint system to catch up to where you were before.
      • To do this, start up a new game with the "New Start" button on the main menu. You'll be prompted for whether you want to start from the very beginning of the story, or skip the prologue. • When using this checkpoint system, you'll start at the beginning of the appropriate day with a neutral personality, default equipment, and appropriate stats, as well as a choice in romance partner, if applicable.
  • MAKE FREQUENT SAVES
    • Making your own saves for a variety of situations throughout the story is one of the best ways to preserve your progress if something should happen. And due to this being a game in active development, it's very possible that things may go wrong and affect a number of your saves! Making frequent saves, however, will help minimize that risk.

I uninstalled/set the game down a while/a long time ago and all of my saves no longer work.

If you last played the game 2+ years ago, there's a good chance that your saves may have become unusable, unfortunately. The good news though is that there's a lot of content for you to catch up on! And the best way to get started again is with the checkpoint system.

  • Start a new playthrough with the checkpoint system
    • If you're booting up the game from a fresh install, you'll immediately go into the prologue after hitting the "New Start" button. Progress through the prologue until the pause button shows up in the top-right corner (should be about 20 seconds or so). Then use the pause button to go back to the main menu again.
    • Upon pressing the "New Start" button again, you'll start a fresh playthrough and be prompted for whether you want to start from the very beginning of the story, or skip the prologue. If you select the option to skip the prologue,  you'll be prompted again if you'd like to skip to certain points in the game's story, going in a sequential order. Choose the one that you remember happening most recently in relation to when you last played, and you'll start with a default setup.
    • When using this checkpoint system, you'll start at the beginning of the appropriate day with a neutral personality, default equipment, and appropriate stats, as well as a choice in romance partner, if applicable.

And that should cover most, if not all, cases! Hope this guide was of help to y'all, and happy trails!
