Tell us what you think of our game design evolution

1.5 years ago me and my friends (graphics designer and sound designer) got interested in online game development. We wanted to create a simple but catchy game from scratch (meaning to create networking communication, graphics, music all by ourselves) and so we developed the following prototype:

Basically this agario-like game represents a pool/billiards, you can't shoot, neither your enemies can and the only thing you can do is to push each other out, basically that became the main idea of the game.

But the thing is... it was hard to go further with this gameplay, although it was an interesting idea, it was hard to make it fun and challenging, so eventually we reworked the whole game design: first we added some collectables, because it was actually hard to push the enemies out, so we introduced another goal for players, then we added the ability to shoot (for both the players and some enemies) to diversify the gameplay, also we added lots of sources of danger such as asteroids, black holes, a final boss and so the game has become a pure action rather than just an unarmed pool, which is way more fun but we completely remade our game design which was initially set. See how much it has changed:

And what do you think? Was it a good idea to switch to the action genre? Or we should have continued to develop the idea of the pool? Looking forward to seeing your comments or any other ideas.

The game itself was published today on itch.io so you can check it out!
