czechvr videos stuttering

I installed the latest (7.3) demo beta on my quest2 yesterday and tried playing a czechvr 8k video using “download video”. The video plays but pauses periodically - approximately for a second every few seconds periodically. I thought this might be due to slow download but even after the video is completely downloaded, playing it from the media folder still produces exactly the same pauses. I have refresh rate set to 120hz but haven’t changed any other settings. Any suggestions on how I could fix this? Is this a codec issue or just beyond the capability of Quest 2? Thanks!

CezchVR 8K videos should be able to play with good performance at 120hz refresh rate. Have you tried playing another video? Can you specify which video is giving you issues so I can test it on my device? Thanks.

I went back and tried a variety of sources - a free video at https://www.czechvr.com/free-full-vr-porn-videos-download - click “download free full video”. Then I tried BadoinkVR’s free video and it also had the exact same issue - 2 seconds of playback followed by 2 seconds of pause. Next, I tried VRBangers - same issue. However, when I lowered the video resolution of the download in VRBangers to 6K (also tried 4K and 2K), the video played without any hiccups. This then makes me think that maybe this has been a download speed issue all along. However, how does it explain having the same issue with replaying a Czechvr trial video from the media folder which I had fully played before (and therefore I am assuming is fully downloaded in the media folder)? Does the media folder only store links to these videos rather than the actual video content? If yes, is there a way to store the downloaded video so I can test that out?

Separately, I also have an SMB1 share which I am unable to access. The first time I ran the app, it discovered the server and attempted to connect to it, but failed due to security reason because I didn’t provide a password. However since then, it is unable to discover the server at all and refuses to recognize it even when I explicitly provide its IP address. I have tried restarting the device and all of these issues persist. Strange!

I'd recommend downloading the video again (or testing a different video). Maybe the file didn't download properly the first time. Are you downloading the file on your PC and manually transferring the file over to your Quest 2? If you're just clicking the download link, and then opening the HereSphere media library, and clicking the saved link there, then the app will just try to stream the link again. HereSphere doesn't actually download the file to your storage.

HereSphere only supports SMB2/3 at the moment (not SMB1). I'd recommend using XBVR to set up a local http server to stream your local network files if you can't get SMB to work properly.

Wanted to close the loop on this conversation. The stuttering must have been some issue on my side (probably some transient issue with the internet connection) because it stopped happening and now I have no issues streaming videos from any of the sites. The playback is excellent. The integration with CzechVR works great. Is there any chance you could also add support for websites supported by the Playa player (VRBangers)? Is that API open? It would be great to see a standard API emerge and be supported by this player.

I am a happy paying user of the app now. One thing I noticed is that CzechVRNetwork now shows up as a tab in the media files section. It stays even when I have completely emptied it out. Is there any way to get rid of it? I don’t want the app to provide any hint of previous activity when the app is opened :-) Thanks!

Developer

Glad to hear it's working well now. The HereSphere web API is freely available for any website to integrate it, so you could try asking the website developers to support it.

To get rid of the CzechVR listing in the media library, click on the text that says "Media Library", and then click on the delete icon next to the CzechVR item. Though, I'd recommend creating a private profile if you're concerned about privacy. In the user settings, you can enter in a new profile name, which will act like a password, since you need to manually input it to load the profile.

Private profiles work great - simple, intuitive and effective, thanks for the feature! Is there a way to get rid of the depth metric that shows up whenever I press pause while playing a video? What is the purpose of that metric for the end user? Does it help with manual focus or is it for debugging autofocus? In any case, couldn’t find an intuitive way to get rid of it so that the paused screen has only the video snapshot and nothing else on it. Also, I have noticed that zooming in distorts the video - the proportions get all wrong and it doesn’t look good. Is there some setting to fix the proportions after zooming in?

Developer

In the advanced video settings, you can enable the "Hide Distance Overlay" toggle near the top. The depth measurements can be used as a guide when adjusting the stitch and alignment settings.

The zooming will distort the image, since it's a spherical video captured from only one viewpoint. There's not enough data to actually move the camera freely and generate new views.

Thanks for the super quick response, will post the details tonight.

By the way, CzechVR supports the HereSphere API, so you can go to czechvrnetwork(dot)com and then press the web API button, which looks like a play button on 4 tiles to the left of the url input box, to load a better interface for streaming videos.

Thanks for this information, will try this!
