After about 3 years development and hundreds of hours of testing, Battle Champion is finally ready for release!
It's a monster-raising game for Android and PC with over 200 Monsters to collect and battle. Comparisons to Pokemon are inevitable (particularly Pokemon Stadium, since the entire game is focused on battling), but it has a number of unique mechanics that set it apart from Nintendo's series. For starters, it has a Final Fantasy-style active battle system, where battles take place in real time and different moves take different amounts of time to charge. Move selection is a bit more complex compared to Pokemon, as many moves have special usage conditions.
For example, Tumble (the Monster on the right in the image above) has several moves that cause it to enter Rolling status, and many of its moves require Rolling status to use, giving it a powerful but somewhat predictable playstyle. Little Fang (the monster on the left) on the other hand, focuses on trapping opponents with Clamp, then either dealing heavy damage or swapping out to a more favourable matchup while the opponent is left unable to switch for a few turns. Pretty much every Monster has some kind of unique special move or mechanic, allowing for tremendous variety in team composition.
Monsters also evolve, into one of two Monsters each time, so each Stage 1 Monster can eventually become one of 4 stage 3 Monsters, though there are battles for Monsters of every evolutionary stage so leaving some Monsters unevolved is viable too. The game is predominantly played against the AI, which is fairly sophisticated (I learned quite a few tricks from the AI even though I wrote it), but you can also play against other players online with rollback-style netcode.
There's way too much to cover in a single post, I have a number of videos on my youtube channel where I discuss the game and its mechanics in more detail. This one covers the release version, but I have videos going back to the alpha version where I talk about changes made based on tester feedback if that kind of thing interests you.
I mainly created this game for my own amusement, and to finally see some of my characters in a finished game (many of the characters in this game originate from a game I created over 20 years ago), but if anyone else had fun with it or came up with some cool strategies it'd make me happy. If you'd like to check out the game, its game page is located below. Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoy the game.
