I have been playing with the community edition for a while with some friends (varying 3-5).

I just noticed about the new version and we thought it would be nice to get it. However we did not want to throw away our progress (2 ships, every quest finished, just cruising around), so we tried the new version. It seems to be incompatible with our current save game.

Is it so?

Indeed saves are not compatible.

Also you would miss out on all the new content, if you would somehow make it work.
