I downloaded the update files and loaded the game but nothing changed, does it need to be in a specific spot or is my version too old? The version I currently have is 20.10.14

Your version is waaaay too old for the update files. The update files are only from the last update to the new update, which is usually within 4 weeks. The version number is in the year-month-day format, which means your version is over half a year old.
The name of the .zip of the update files always has the version number of the previous version in it, for example "Renryuu Ascension 21.05.02 - Update files for version 21.04.24 or later only!"
Download the full version, and copy the www/save folder from the old game folder into the same location of the new game folder.
