How to download an update for a game

Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but I don't want to overwrite my save data and I can't find anything regarding this anywhere online. I downloaded a game and have been playing it off and on. A new update was released so there's a new version of the game. My options are either to extract it somewhere separate, extract it into the folder and let it overwrite all the old files that share names, or extract it but do not copy over the new files. I would expect overwriting is the way to go, but will my save data be overwritten? What's the best practice with updating and how can I be sure I won't lose my progress?

That depends a lot on the way the game saves data. For example, some games save on regedit, so it doesn't matter where you install the game the save file will be there. Some games save a file in a standard directory, so it doesn't matter where you install it too.  However, there are some games that save in a file in the game's directory instead, and installing in another folder would not have the save files (it might delete save data if you overwrite the old version too). I would reccomend extracting the update in another folder and test if it works. If not, try to find the save file from the old version of the game and drop it in the new one.

Ah okay. That was essentially my plan if no one answered me haha, but I figured I'd check and see if there was any one standard. Thanks for the info!
