I Recommend against Steam release

Hello, Fishlicka. If you're looking, this message is for you.

I saw your post expressing your interest in looking for new ways to distribute Juice Galaxy. I admire and agree with you on this, and I wish you the best in making that push.

That being said, I have noticed that you suggested Steam as a platform to try to release on. I have to come and make a recommendation against releasing Juice Galaxy on Steam.

My reason is for the community and the sort of expectations, spoken and otherwise, by the vocal members of the Steam game-browsing community regarding unfinished games.

The short of it is that these guys dislike WIP games, free or otherwise, and they don't have a lot of respect or patience for a project that develops release by release, update by update. Labelling Juice Galaxy as Early Access might ease this hostility a bit, slightly, but it would be countered by the addition of pressure from users who latch on to push updates without fail and very regularly.

I for one personally like the freedom you've had and have used effectively for developing Juice Galaxy further. I would rather see what comes of Juice Galaxy naturally, at your own preferred pace. This would hardly be sustainable under the pressure from the Steam "fan"-base.

On a mechanical note, I like being able to play each update of Juice Galaxy as its own update, which stands apart from how Steam does things; on Steam, only one version of a game is available to play at a given time.

As someone who uses steam a ton I disagree with this, yeah I have seen some people get very hostile at this kind of stuff but screw those people, I love games like this and would totally accept a steam release and with the hundreds of other games on the platform if someone doesn't like it they can check out another one instead, as some people do not like games in alpha like this not everyone is like that and rather people will get mad at people who start working on games and completely abandon them for good like Garbage Day for example or some of the many other games on steam, which this dev giving out constant updates is actually a lot better than most the devs the steam community has issues with. (sorry if this sounded like shizz I am extremely tired rn lol)

The Steam users being interested in a game like this are probably more prone to keeping a friendly opinion on the release schedule. I believe that a Steam release could create a much bigger community and even inspire Fishlicka to expand development.  What are the options? Steam has the biggest game community with a wide variety of tastes in genres.  Who is interested in games like this? Players who have played similar games before, i.e., (psychedelic) indie games. Such users do not see continuous releases as something awkward, moreover, probably even likable, as they have more input in the development, also contributing to a better gaming experience for everyone, with new opinions and perspectives on the possibilities of Juice Galaxy. It's also worth mentioning the eventuality of some monetary gain, for Fishlicka creating an amazing game like this, would increase a lot.

As of this, I also see your point and I agree the Steam community can become pretty wild from time to time. But, in this instance, I don't think this will become a problem as Fishlicka is an Indie dev, and their creative freedom will always be backed by the users here on itch.io.

To summarize, I support whatever Fishlicka chooses to do. I also have a positive perspective of the future of Juice Galaxy if they choose to make a Steam release.

I also disagree, a great example is Baldurs Gate 3, the game is a mess and is very far from finished yet it is insanely popular with the people who have played it. I for one would love to support fishlicka more by paying for a steam release.
