Am I supposed to be able to skip the entire combat? I only tried running away because I remembered that I never saved before the first battle.

Yes, it skips the whole thing. Levels are replayable, so you can go back and play through it. I put that feature so either people can do what you needed to and just save and return, or skip past a fight that they just can't quite puzzle through (or are too fed up with).
