This is a mantra that I picked up for myself before even getting my MFA: trust your reader. There are so many people out there reading books, and every single one of them are smart cookies. Coddling your readers makes for an awkward experience at best, and can be subtly insulting at worst.

Does this at time make my writing less approachable? Perhaps, depending on how one views approachability. It is my job to tell a story that is revealed over time, to build a world that must be traversed to be understood, and to offer up characters one must get to know as one might any other person.

It is a fine line to be walked, and I know that I have not always succeeded at it. Some of my writing is recondite and deliberately left without an easy approach because the act of reading the story is part of the experience, but some of it is just plain confusing, and I don't mean that in the good way.
