They do seem to be total goobers at times, yes. Personally, I would like to see a game where you can create your own stats, which like RPG's, can affect how things work out. SM3 was one of those, but the world-building like we have here with Isfa was totally lacking.

Confusion can overpower logic. In this case, I think that the MC is just trying to make sense of it. MCxQuestions+Aveline=Answers. That, and keeping it bottled up inside could actually make it worse for him. Also, I think it would be apparent before too long to those around him that he "Ain't from around these parts."

There's a lot of work involved with creating characters. Jyp might get around to it eventually, but I think adding content for the base game or already existing characters might be a better use of time right now.
