Impressive port so far. I did notice a few things tho.
For controls, attacking on the ground makes you unable to jump for a certain amount of frames. The original allows you to jump at any point in the attacking animation, so this feels really bad imo. You try to throw and jump at the same time and you are just stuck on the ground as it eats your jump.
And similar, if you are moving and you attack and jump on the same frame, you will not attack.
A couple glitches in this clip. An enemy sprite got stuck floating in the air on the first screen.
And you can skip the first boss by having him hit you into the door.
Awesome to see the game coming to NES. Played for a few minutes and noticed a couple things I hope can be fixed.
Jumping and landing into the bottom of walls kills you. Feels cheap.
Up also being jump causes a lot accidental jumps, which leads to deaths, especially coming off ladders. So I hope only the A button will jump.
Overall feels a bit weird that Up or Down goes into the ladder animation everywhere, but that's more of a polish thing. But Down doing the ladder before ducking is unintuitive, even if B ducks as well.
I enjoyed the game and did a little run of it. But I really wish the isometric controls matched the normal conventions of the genre, that Up = Up Right. As someone that has played a number of isometric games, this just feels totally wrong and makes it hard to move without fully concentrating. If you do a full version I would love at least the option to choose dpad orientation.
I've been save stating thru instead of using in game saving while I'm messing around, so not sure if it messed with that. I have only noticed one other issue so far, I found a floor clip. Here's a clip of it. If you hug left going thru this transition. I don't think you can softlock since you need slide to get in here, unless there's another way.
