Check the Help menu. You can gain xp from excess water or by using the photosynthesis bar, dragging its icon with the cursor or holding Q or E. Once you level up the upgrade menu shows up.

The new controls are perfect, good job!

I just finished the game, the controls are awkward, it's hard to dodge any bullet and most of the time you will die because of that, if we want to ignore this problem it's still a lot of fun. This game is more strategic that it actually looks, your allies are really helpful and ignoring them will only make the game harder, worst mistake of my life. Overall it's a 7/10.
